Thankfulness

Good Neighbors

August 25, 2019 By Dr. Linda Seger Leave a Comment

Peter and I had a thank you dinner party on Sunday night, August 18, for the neighbors who helped when he had an automobile accident in June. Good neighbors are an amazing blessing and all these people at our dinner table live within three houses of us.

I’m taking the picture at the head of the table. On my right, Brian is the person who called me in Houston when I was on my way to Washington DC to sing at Kennedy Center and told me about the accident and I came home immediately. Peter is doing well and it doesn’t look like any permanent damage but it was quite serious and the car was totaled.

Debbie, Brian’s wife who is next to her, had been in the hospital and we had brought food to her, so there was actually a point that we were bringing food to each other.

On my left is my assistant Katie. She looked after things until I got home and then picked me up from the airport shuttle and helped Peter and me organize things with insurance and doctors, etc.

Next to Katie are the neighbors Chuck and Ann actually live next-door to Katie and one house away from Debbie and Brian who live next door to us. As soon as Chuck and Ann heard about the accident, they immediately brought food over to us.

We had a terrific party. We had appetizers on the deck and it was a gorgeous evening. And then after dinner we went back on the deck and we actually saw the little light that looks like a star but moves which is the space station. It was a tiny, tiny, light but we were able to watch it.

With these neighbors, we sometimes share movie nights or watch the Academy Awards together. Sometimes at Christmas we have a progressive dinner where we go to each other’s houses for certain courses. Most of these neighbors have a key to our home so if there is an emergency, even when we’re gone, they can help out. And we have a list of neighbors that we can call at two in the morning – including these – and we have told them they can call us in the middle of the night if there is an emergency.

Debbie and Brian used to own a bed and breakfast which is located next door to us – although it closed about a year and a half ago – and Debbie is an amazing cook and baker so I have borrowed many a cup of sugar or an egg or a dash of chili powder from her when I don’t have my kitchen act together as well is she does. She has taught me to use our food processor, she has the annual cookie exchange at Christmas where I bake 12 dozen cookies. As Debbie has said, I have improved over the last 15 years of taking part in her cookie exchange!

Sailing Away

October 17, 2018 By Dr. Linda Seger Leave a Comment

We were on a Windstar sailing ship for seven days, sailing around 6 Greek islands including a stop in Ephesus in Turkey. We loved the size of the ship. It had 142 passengers on board with, I believe, 99 crew. The crew was terrific – a great sense of humor and fun and always gracious and always warm. They memorized our names quickly. They were always attentive and kind.
One of the peak experiences was watching the sails unfurl while playing the music from the movie “1492”. The music was called “Conquest of Paradise” written by Vangelis, it definitely gave us all a rush! ( Watch Music Video of Conquest of Paradise Here)

We Loved our room! It was very compact but it was actually a bit larger than we expected. Lots of storage space including the closet and plenty of drawers and shelves. The suitcases fit very well underneath the bed but were accessible if we needed them. There was a little seating area at the table with built in cushioned benches that was very comfortable. The shower was a good size and even taking a shower during the storm we encountered was fine.

Since we sailed the Greek islands on Windstar from September 29 to October 7, most of the passengers were older – probably an average age of 60 – and most were retired. We actually liked that since we are in our early 70s. It was easy to meet people and there were always opportunities to share a table at dinner which led to some wonderful conversations.

We have met so many gracious people who take such good care of us in so many different ways. And it feels good for us to leave behind for a while the chaos that is going on in our country at this time. Peter and I are doing a news and television blackout and figure if we need to know something, somebody will tell. It feels really good to be away from all of that and to be in a totally different environment. At home, sometimes, we have felt that time goes so quickly and on this trip it isn’t so much that the time goes slowly but the days are very full.

The Windstar was a fabulous experience and we also had a fabulous Capt. – Belinda. She had a great sense of humor and was obviously very experienced and gave us a wonderful cruise!

Linda’s Speech at Colorado College

November 15, 2017 By Dr. Linda Seger Leave a Comment

Colorado College awarded Linda with the Louis T Benezet Award on October 14th, 2017. The award recipients were given a few minutes to speak at the Convocation Service held during the Homecoming Reunion. In her speech, Linda expressed her gratitude to the college and explained how this award helped to confirm the difficult and unconventional direction she took when she first began her career. Below you will find the You Tube video of the service posted by Colorado College, which includes Linda’s speech.  It is set to begin just as she is being introduced. The entire video is well worth watching as it includes, along with other excellent speeches; her class of 1967  receiving their award for Best Reunion Participation and the College President thanking them for their contribution to the new Tech Sandbox.
